Hornets, Cox, and WYES sponsor filmmaking students experience

February 1, 2008

Jim Moriarty, YES Productions Vice President and General Manager, speaks to Loyola filmmaking students.

Thirty-nine Loyola University New Orleans students received studio and location instruction in digital video production and post-production on Wednesday, January 30, thanks to sponsorship by the New Orleans Hornets, Cox Cable, and WYES TV/YES Productions.

Three digital filmmaking classes from Loyolaĺs College of Music and Fine Arts visited the studios of WYES and then traveled to the New Orleans Arena where they toured both high-definition and standard-definition multi-camera production trucks at a live Hornets basketball game.

While at WYES, students were allowed to interview for intern and working studio positions at the station for the spring semester. WYES Productionsĺ Vice President and General Manager Jim Moriarity has also arranged the hiring of Loyola video students to work as production assistants for the internationally-televised NBA All-Star Game week, February 11 through 17 at the New Orleans Arena.

Students spent varying amounts of time between the two sites, depending on area of interest. The Non-Linear Editing for Film & Video class visited with professional editors at the studio before heading to the Arena. The Introduction to Digital Filmmaking class split time between the sites and the Writing and Directing class spent most of its time at the Arena production site observing set-up for that nightĺs Hornets game.

Students were also encouraged to revisit the studios on Friday, February 1, to participate in the taping of WYESĺ local productions.
