Diboll Art Gallery exhibit features local pencil and paper artwork

July 18, 2008

The Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery at Loyola University New Orleans is currently featuring the unique exhibit titled Pencil & Paper.

According to Karoline Schleh, director of the Diboll Art Gallery, members of Loyola’s faculty, staff and students, and members of the local art community were invited to create pieces made from only using graphite pencil and white paper.

“As a result to this invitation, more than 40 artists responded and a vast array of works including two-dimensional and three-dimensional traditional drawings and conceptual explorations of pencil and paper were created,” said Schleh

For inspiration, the artists were given the following quote by Tania Kovats who co-wrote The Drawing Book - a survey of drawing: the primary means of expression:

“When NASA first started sending astronauts into space, they realized that the ballpoint pen would not work at zero gravity. A million dollar investment and two years of tests resulted in a pen that would write in space, upside down, on any surface and at any temperature from below freezing to over 300 degrees centigrade. When confronted with the same problem, the Russians used a pencil.”

Pencil & Paper will be on display until Sept. 8 in the Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery, located on the 4th floor of Monroe Library on Loyola’s main campus. Admission to the exhibit is free.
