Woodrow Wilson Fellow and novelist, Lynne Sharon Schwartz, visits Loyola

October 17, 2008

Woodrow Wilson Fellow, novelist, essayist and poet, Lynne Sharon Schwartz, will visit Loyola University New Orleans to present readings and lectures about her experiences as an author.

Schwartz will be honored with a reception in Loyola’s Monroe Library at 5:30 p.m. and will give a reading and a lecture at 7:30 p.m., in the St. Charles Room, located in the Danna Student Center, on Oct. 20. Both events are open to the public.

Schwartz began publishing stories in the 1970’s. The first work that brought her wide attention was a Watergate satire published in The New Republic, called “The Tapes as Theater.”

Her first novel, “Rough Strife,” (1980) about the difficulties of a long marriage, was nominated for a National Book Award.

The novel “Disturbances in the Field,” (1983) about a family tragedy, brought Schwartz critical acclaim and “Leaving Brooklyn,” (1989) a coming-of-age novel laced with the quest for erotic and worldly knowledge, was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.

Her most recent novel, “The Writing on the Wall,” (2005) is set in New York City in the weeks following the September 11 attacks. It explores their impact on individual lives, as well as the inadequacy of the public language used in its wake by the government and the media.

Schwartz’s reviews and criticism have appeared in many leading magazines and papers. She has received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Foundation for the Arts, and has taught in many writing programs in the United States and abroad. She is presently on the faculty of the Bennington Writing Seminars.

Schwartz has a bachelor of arts from Barnard College in New York City, and attended graduate school at New York University.
