The College of Music and Fine Arts offers an exciting lineup of upcoming events as part of its Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series.

Alex McDonald, guest piano concert

The 2007 New Orleans International Piano Competition silver medalist, Alex McDonald, will perform a guest piano lecture and concert titled “Who Was Franz Liszt and Why Does He Matter,” on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall.

Performed works include Liszt’s “Consolations,” S. 172, (lento placido and quasi adagio); “Les jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este,” S. 163; and Sonata in b minor, S. 178.

McDonald began his piano studies at the age of 4. Since his orchestral debut at age 11, he has soloed with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Mexico in Toluca, Mexico, the Utah Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony, the Corpus Christi Symphony, and others. His solo recitals include performances for Pro Musica in El Paso, the American Chopin Society, the Texas Conservatory for Young Artists and the Miami Civic Music Association.

McDonald was awarded the second prize at the Gina Bachauer International Young Artist Piano Competition, grand prize in the Kingsville International Young Performers Competition and grand prize at the Music Teachers National Association Yamaha Competition.

McDonald is currently pursuing his master of music degree under Yoheved Kaplinsky and Julian Martin at The Juilliard School in New York. He completed his bachelor of music degree under Russell Sherman at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, with academic honors and distinction in performance.

Lecture and recital with cellist Carlos Prieto

Acclaimed cellist Carlos Prieto will present a lecture and recital on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communication/Music Complex, on Loyola’s main campus. This performance is free and open to the public.

Prieto will perform the Suite in C major for unaccompanied cello (“Prélude,” “Sarabande,” “Bourrée” and “Gigue”) by J. S. Bach and two movements from Suite for Unaccompanied Cello (“Deciso” and “Presto scherzando”) by Samuel Zyman. He will also speak about his book, “The Adventures of a Cello.”

Prieto, born in Mexico and educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Techonology, is one of the most respected cellists in the world, regularly premiering works composed for him by Latin American, North American and European composers.

Prieto began playing the cello at age 4, studying with the Hungarian cellist Imre Hartman. He later studied with Pierre Fournier in Geneva and Leonard Rose in New York.

He has played with orchestras from all over the world including the Royal Philharmonic in London, the Boston Pops, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra and the Spanish National Orchestra.

Prieto was a long-time friend of famed composer Igor Stravinsky. He also knew composer Dimitri Shostakovich and premiered Shostakovich’s first cello concerto in different cities in Mexico as well as in Spain.

Since 1980, Prieto has played the world premieres of more than 80 compositions. He has recorded more than 90 compositions, including the complete Bach suites, and works by Shostakovich, Saint-Saens, Boccherini, Fauré, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Kodaly and Bruch. In addition, he has recorded 11 CDs devoted to cello music from Latin America and Spain which include the world premieres of many concertos and chamber works.

Prieto has written six books which include “Russian Letters,” “Around the World with the Cello,” “From the USSR to Russia,” “The Adventures of a Cello,” “Paths and Images of Music” and “5000 Years of Words.” A seventh book, “Throughout China with the Cello,” is scheduled to appear this year.

Prieto’s background includes degrees in engineering and in economics from MIT.

Jazz Underground Series salutes jazz trumpet icon Clifford Brown

Jazz trumpeter Leroy Jones will perform a salute to jazz trumpet icon Clifford Brown in “I Remember Clifford,” on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Satchmo’s Jazz Café, located in the Danna Student Center.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and Loyola faculty and staff.

Born in New Orleans, Jones began studying the trumpet at age 10. By the time he was 13, he was already performing and leading Danny Barker’s young Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band. The Fairview Band has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Smithsonian Institute Festival of Culture and Folklore. The band later evolved into the Hurricane Brass Band, which became the seed of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

For the past decade, Jones has been a member of the Harry Connick, Jr., Orchestra, and has performed on numerous recordings with various artists. He also currently leads one of the Preservation Hall Jazz Bands.

Jones has two critically acclaimed solo releases titled “Mo’ Cream From The Crop” and “Props for Pops” on the Sony/Columbia label.
