Loyolaĺs news coverage sees sharp increase

A recent media monitoring report shows that Loyola University New Orleans has increased its secured media coverage and press mentions by 37 percent from the 2006-2007 academic year to 2007-2008.

Meltwater News, an online media monitoring service, reported that in 2006-2007, Loyola had 1,810 news stories and/or press mentions. That figure climbed in 2007-2008 to 2,473. Those figures represent online news coverage by Louisiana media, U.S. media and international media. Broadcast and radio news coverage of Loyola was not included in the media monitoring report unless these stories were posted online.

The Office of Public Affairs within the Division of Institutional Advancement coordinates communication and media relations for the university. Meredith Hartley, director of Public Affairs, attributes this boost in coverage and press mentions to a very active and socially conscious community at Loyola.

“Loyola’s faculty, staff and students are an amazing well from which to draw interesting news stories. Our community here is doing a lot, and we’re making headlines. Not only do we have faculty members who are participating in a number of fascinating research efforts and pilot programs, but we also have students who are going beyond their studies and seeking ways to make an impact in our community and beyond,” said Hartley. “Our faculty and staff are also called upon often by the media to be sources for various subjects, and their expertise in their areas and their willingness to work with reporters keep those requests coming.”

Public Affairs saw a 28 percent increase in publicity requests last year, with 170 requests in 2006-2007 and 218 in 2007-2008. Additionally, the office distributed 22 percent more news releases this past year, with 172 in 2006-2007 and 210 in 2007-2008.

Vicki Frank, vice president for Institutional Advancement, says the numbers speak for themselves, but that they couldn’t have been achieved without a strong participation from the entire university community.

“I’d like to thank all the faculty, staff and students who volunteer their time to meet with the press when Public Affairs comes calling, and for those faculty members who continue to develop great source relationships with news media on a regular basis,” said Frank. “We are glad to share the results that your participation has helped us achieve.”
