Loyola offers variety of events to celebrate Women's History Month

February 27, 2009

Loyola University New Orleans, in conjunction with its Women’s Resource Center, will celebrate Women’s History Month with a variety of events that pay tribute to women who make a difference in our community and beyond. The events are all free and open to the public.

Additionally, the Women’s Studies Program at Loyola is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Women’s Studies prepares students to gain an awareness of women's issues, to understand how social constructions of gender and sexuality affect and have shaped daily experience, broader social structures, institutions, social relations and cultural and aesthetic production.

The following events will be offered during Women’s History Month:

Monday, March 2, 12:30 p.m.

Brown Bag Lunch Series — “The Trojan Women”

Women’s Resource Center, Mercy Hall, Room 103

Bring your lunch and enjoy a presentation by theatre professor Georgia Gresham and guest director Arben Kumbaro on the play “The Trojan Women,” which debuts March 20, at 8 p.m., in Marquette Theater on Loyola’s main campus. The play is an adaptation of Euripides’ Greek tragedy, in which the women of a fallen Troy await their enslavement.

Tuesday, March 3, 6 – 8 p.m.

Women and Environmental Activism

The Living Room, Monroe Library

Local women activists will host an informal forum on environmental issues: What does it mean to be a woman doing this work? How do environmental issues impact the lives of women in particular? And how can the local community become involved?

Monday, March 9, 12:30 p.m.

Brown Bag Lunch Series — Disaster justice and environmental activism

Women’s Resource Center, Mercy Hall 103

Bring your lunch and discuss disaster justice and environmental activism with Rob Verchick, a nationally recognized expert in environment law and the Gauthier-St. Martin Eminent Scholar Chair in Environmental Law at Loyola’s College of Law.

Tuesday, March 10, 7 p.m.

Celebrating Lindy Boggs — A Legacy of Change

Roussel Performance Hall, Communications/Music Complex

Award-winning journalists Cokie and Rebecca Roberts, Boggs’daughter and granddaughter, respectively, join former television anchor and host Margaret Dubuisson in discussing this political icon’s impact on social change, following a screening of filmmaker Bess Carrick’s documentary, “Lindy Boggs: Steel and Velvet.”

Thursday, March 19, 7 p.m.

Add Women: Change Everything

Nunemaker Auditorium, Monroe Hall

Special guest Marie Wilson will discuss the ways that young women can be leaders in their lives and in their communities. An advocate of women’s issues for more than 30 years, Wilson is founder and president of The White House Project, co-creator of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work® Day and author of “Closing the Leadership Gap: Why Women Can and Must Help Run the World.”

The Women’s Resource Center aims to provide Loyola women and men with a positive college experience by responding to their needs as gendered human beings and by fostering an environment that is free of sexism and other forms of institutional and individual forms of oppression. It strives to create a supportive and inclusive campus environment through programming, services, and advocacy.
