The Monk Institute graduating class plays last performance on campus

April 17, 2009

The first graduating class of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance will play its last concert at Loyola University New Orleans this Sunday. The Loyola Jazz Band also will also perform at the swan song concert.

This free performance takes place Sunday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on Loyola’s main campus.

The Monk Institute Ensemble will open the concert, performing fresh arrangements of jazz standards and original compositions.

The Loyola Jazz Band, directed by professor of music John Mahoney, will follow with a program including two original arrangements by Monk students, “Long-Liked Tune,” by Gordon Au, and “Spring Song,” by Vadim Neselovskyi. The group will also perform “Anticipating Colorado,” an original tune by Mahoney; “Under the Wire,” a Gordon Goodwin piece featuring Greg Agid, a music industry studies senior from Kenner, on clarinet; and “When Sunny Gets Blue” a Stan Kenton arrangement featuring Daniel Ray, a music industry studies senior from Slidell, on trombone.

Many of the graduating seniors from the College of Music and Fine Arts will be featured Jazz Band performers on the program. These students include Woody Rinker on alto saxophone, Chris Guccione on drums, Josh Gouzy on bass, Alex Bachari on guitar, Jesse Reeks on piano, James Westfall on vibraphone and Peter Honan on trumpet.
