Choral alumni gather for reunion events

June 19, 2009

Alumni from the choral program at Loyola University New Orleans who studied under Larry Wyatt, Ph.D., from 1973-1987 will reunite this weekend.

The weekend of activities will include rehearsals, parties and picnics, culminating with a concert of the Loyola Alumni Chorus, directed by Wyatt, on Saturday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. The concert takes place in Nunemaker Auditorium, located in Monroe Hall, on Loyola’s main campus and is free and open to the public.

Singers will perform selections including “Kyrie” from the Requiem, op. 9, by Maurice Duruflé; “Alleluia” from “Lobet den Herrn,” by J.S. Bach; “Kyrie” and “Gloria,” from Mass in G, by Franz Schubert; “Sanctus,” “Benedictus” and “Agnus Dei,” from the “Coronation Mass,” k. 317, by W. A. Mozart; and “Chichester Psalms,” movement 3, by Leonard Bernstein.

Wyatt, who served as director of choral activities and coordinator of the vocal department at Loyola University New Orleans for 14 years, is in his 22nd year as director of choral studies at the University of South Carolina. He holds degrees from Murray State University, the University of North Texas and Florida State University. While in New Orleans, he founded the New Orleans Symphony Chorus.

In addition to the New Orleans Symphony, his choirs have sung with the Houston, Atlanta, Charleston, South Carolina Philharmonic and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestras. He has prepared choruses for Robert Shaw, Lawrence Foster, Krzysztof Penderecki, Maxim Shostakovich, Robert Page, David Stahl, Philippe Entremont, Leonard Slatkin, Sergiu Comissiona, Andrew Massey, James Paul, Nicholas Smith and Donald Portnoy. He also has conducted and served as a clinician in Mexico, Argentina, Bulgaria and Canada.

Donations and proceeds from the reunion activities will benefit the Loyola Choir Program, currently under the direction of Dr. Meg Hulley-Frazier, associate professor of music.
