Loyola community volunteers for 10th annual day of service

November 6, 2009

Wolves on the Prowl 2008 at the Uptown Shepherd Center

Loyola University New Orleans Wolfpack pride and community service will be on exhibit all over the United States in November, as alumni and students participate in volunteer projects for Wolves on the Prowl 2009.

Wolves on the Prowl is an annual national day of service planned and led by Loyola’s Alumni Association and Student Government Association, which pairs volunteers from the Loyola community with programs that need help. This year, alumni in 13 cities, including New Orleans, will roll up their sleeves for various charities.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, students will join Loyola alumni in New Orleans on several projects. Volunteers will participate in the Good Shepherd School field day, rebuild houses with the St. Bernard Project, beautify the Odyssey House and Success Prep Academy, plant fruit orchards with Parkway Partners and decorate New Orleans City Park for its annual Christmas in the Oaks fundraiser.

Elsewhere, alumni will clean Nazareth House, a family homeless shelter in Boston; sort food at the Greater Chicago Food Depository and at Catholic Charities of Central Texas in Austin, Texas; volunteer at the Texas Discovery Gardens in Dallas; prepare meals and bags of supplies for homeless at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission; participate in the United Way of Greater Los Angeles Home Walk; assist Raleigh, N.C., students with college and career planning; landscape, paint and organize Pathways to Care in Casselberry, Fla.; volunteer at the Sallie House, a home for children awaiting placement with foster families in Tampa, Fla.; assist senior citizens with an art project at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington; and assist in the garden at the Lafayette Catholic Service Centers in Lafayette, La.

The following weekend, Saturday, Nov. 14, Loyola alumni will sort and distribute clothing at the St. Patrick Center in St. Louis.

Associate Director of Alumni Relations David Robinson-Morris said Wolves on the Prowl service projects are great ways for alumni to stay involved and contribute to Loyola’s mission to develop individuals who dedicate their lives to service for others.

“In the Jesuit tradition, our volunteers will seek perspective on their service through group and personal reflection,” said Robinson-Morris. “Wolves on the Prowl is an opportunity for students and alumni to interact with local communities that reflect the reality of the world around them, and inspire them to act.”
