Institute for Continuing Legal Education offers success tips for court and beyond

January 8, 2010

The Institute for Continuing Legal Education at the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law presents “From File to Trial: 8 Keys to Success in Court and Beyond,” on Wed., Jan. 13, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Pan American Life Building, 601 Poydras Street, in the Orleans Room on the 11th floor.

Judge Mark A. Drummond of the Eighth Judicial Circuit of Illinois will teach a course on courtroom techniques, including jury selection, direct examination and closing arguments.

Drummond serves as a program director at-large for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. He was the 2003-04 co-chair of the trial practice committee of the American Bar Association Litigation Section and is an associate editor of litigation news for the American Bar Association. Prior to joining the bench, Drummond maintained a general trial practice in Illinois and served as a trial advocacy instructor and trial consultant.

Fewer than 5 percent of cases that are filed go to trial, and attorneys with actual trial experience are a rare commodity. Drummond professes that attorneys who improve their courtroom techniques and are willing to go to trial get better results for their clients even in the cases that do not go to trial.

Seating is limited. Advance registration is available at www.law.loyno.edu/cle. For more information, contact the CLE office at 504-861-5441 or 866-250-8617 or clelaw@loyno.edu.

Registration is $210 for regular admission and $185 for Loyola University New Orleans alumni, government and nonprofit employees. Six CLE credit hours including one hour of ethics and one hour of professionalism will be available to lawyers.

Proceeds from this program will go directly to the College of Law’s Community Justice Clinic, part of the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic and Center for Social Justice, which brings legal services and information to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
