Lenten Series 2010: "Sacred Music and Sacred Words"

Loyola University New Orleans’ Jesuit Center and the Alumni Association present “Sacred Music and Sacred Words,” a series of concerts and lectures in February and March to observe the season of Lent.

The series is headlined by Ignatian spirituality expert the Rev. Joe Tetlow, S.J., and popular New Orleans priest, the Rev. Tony Ricard ‘87. The series kicks off Friday, Feb. 26, with “Ayiti Cheri,” a Haitian benefit concert and dance performance.

All events begin at 7 p.m., and are free and open to the public, however donations will also be accepted at the concerts to raise money for Loyola’s Haiti relief efforts. A coffee reception will be held after each event. Everyone is welcome and free parking is available.

The 2010 Lenten Series schedule:

Friday, Feb. 26:
“Ayiti Cheri,” Haitian Benefit Concert and Dance Performance, 7 p.m., Roussel Hall. The concert will feature Loyola Director of Orchestras Jean Montès and his string quartet and Haitian performers, art and food.

Wed., March 3: “What is Sacred about Rock and Roll?,” 7 p.m., Ignatius Chapel in Bobet Hall. A concert by a liturgical choir and musicians’ group comprised of both Loyola students and alumni.

Wed., March 10: “Don't Be Stupid! Lessons You Should Already Know,” lecture by the Rev. Tony Ricard, 7 p.m., Ignatius Chapel in Bobet Hall. Ricard is pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea parish in New Orleans and core instructor of church doctrine for the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana.

Wed., March 17: “American Culture, Religion, and Spirituality,” lecture by the Rev. Joseph A. Tetlow, S.J., 7 p.m., Ignatius Chapel in Bobet Hall. Tetlow is the director of Montserrat Jesuit Retreat House in Lake Dallas, Texas, and former head of Jesuit Secretariat for Ignatian Spirituality in Rome. He is also the author of many books on Ignatian spirituality.

Wed., March 24: John Mahoney Concert, 7 p.m., Ignatius Chapel in Bobet Hall. Professor Mahoney is coordinator of jazz studies in the College of Music and Fine Arts at Loyola. He will be joined by members of his jazz band.
