Loyola Writing Institute offers summer workshop for high school students

May 14, 2010

This summer, the Writing Institute at Loyola University New Orleans will offer a two-week creative writing workshop for high school students who have completed grades 9, 10 or 11. The workshop, which will cover the topics “Experimental Short Fiction” and “The Story of You: Writing Creative Non-Fiction,” will be held June 7-18 on Loyola’s main campus. Tuition is $200 and need-based scholarships are available. To register, visit the Loyola Writing Institute’s website at www.loyno.edu/lwi.

The “Experimental Short Fiction” workshop will examine visual art, pop culture, architecture and music, along with fiction. Participants will experiment with words and text, appropriating other genres and using such techniques as cut-ups and collage. Students will also build upon pre-existing narratives, stories or characters to create fiction.

In “The Story of You: Writing Creative Non-Fiction” workshop, students will compare elements of fiction and non-fiction and discuss where the two forms meet.

“We will explore how much can we embellish and how far can we push the truth, and will use conventions of fiction to create dynamic and colorful non-fiction prose,” said Robert Bell, instructor of English and workshop director. “If your English teacher ever told you to ‘write what you know,’ here is your chance to do it.”

During the program, students will also take tours of local places of interest such as the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Audubon Zoo, and will use these outings as ways to gather inspiration for their writing.
