Albanian art exhibit launches 2011 Montage season

September 2, 2011

The first exhibit of the 2011-12 Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series, “Ekspozitë Fjala Exhibition,” will feature works created by students and faculty from the Academy of Arts in Tirana, Albania. A lecture by the artists will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery, located on the fourth floor of the Monroe Library. An opening reception will immediately follow. The exhibit is free and open to the public and runs until Oct. 13.

Each piece within the exhibition will explore themes of Albanian history, the experiences of the artists who lived it, and the current climate of the culture. The exhibit will also feature works created by special guest artist Fatos Lubonja, an Albanian writer and dissident who spent 17 years in prison. He is an outspoken critic of the Albanian government, Prime Minister Sali Berisha and opposition leader Edvin Kristaq Rama. He edits the literary journal Përpjekja (Endeavour), in Tirana.

“This will be particularly interesting to our visual art students and faculty at Loyola, who will have an opportunity to see the similarities and differences to their own culture and ways of creating artwork,” said Karoline Schleh, director of the Diboll Gallery.

“The word fjala translates to ‘word.’ Appropriately enough, this exhibition is the first part of an international dialogue between Loyola and the academy in Tirana, as our faculty and students are planning their own show there in the near future,” Schleh said.

This event is funded in part by the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Embassy in Tirana through a grant agreement. Support for this exhibition is also funded in part by the John Burton Harter Charitable Trust.
