Loyola University New Orleans presents “Living American Song,” an afternoon of selected works by modern American composers, on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m. in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Calhoun Street.

Featuring soprano JeAnne Swinley and baritone Jonathan Hays, the concert will highlight works by today's leading composers, including Jake Heggie, Robert Pound, Lowell Lieberman and Libby Larsen.

“Jonathan and I largely wanted to do this as a tribute and a nod to the fantastic music that is being written right now,” Swinley said. “So many fantastic living American composers need their time in the sun next to the greats of the last 60-plus years.”

Hays and Swinley have been friends since attending the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Conn. They made their professional debuts at the same time and have since performed together many times.

Swinley, who spent several years singing as a concert soloist in New York City, is currently completing her Master of Music at Loyola University New Orleans. Recent performance highlights include the title role in Carlisle Floyd's “Susannah” and soprano soloist for Rossini's “Stabat Mater” with the St. Charles Presbyterian Chancel Choir and members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

Hays has performed with the Los Angeles Opera, Washington Opera, the Lincoln Center Festival, Portland Opera and American Symphony Orchestra, among many others. Later this season he will sing with the York Symphony Orchestra in “Carmina Burana,” as well as at solo recitals in Pennsylvania.

Admission to the event is free. Free parking is available in the West Road garage located on West Road and accessible from St. Charles Avenue.
