Loyola Chorale to sing at Red Mass

September 30, 2011

The Loyola University New Orleans Chorale is scheduled to sing at Red Mass, the official opening of the judicial year for the State of Louisiana, on Monday, Oct. 3, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Louis Cathedral, with the procession of judges, lawyers and officials of all faiths beginning at 9:15 a.m.

“Just as universities begin their school year with a Mass of the Holy Spirit using red vestments, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, so also the judicial year begins with a Mass, invoking and asking for the guidance of the Holy Spirit while wearing red vestments, hence the term, Red Mass,” said the Rev. Lawrence W. Moore, S.J., Loyola’s associate dean for academic affairs and the Philip and Eugenie Brooks Distinguished Professor of Law.

“The Chorale sang at last year's Red Mass as well, so we're particularly honored to be invited back again this year," said Meg Frazier, Loyola’s associate professor of music and director of choral activities.

According to Moore, Red Mass originated in Paris in the 1200s and arrived in the U.S. in the 19th century. Today, almost every major city has a Red Mass.

University Ministry will provide a ride to and from the Mass for those who plan to attend. The van will leave the Pine Street parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and return to Loyola around 11:45 a.m. To reserve a seat in the van, sign up at the Broadway Activities Center on a form hanging from the door of Rm. 102.
