Montage Series features vocal, composer masterclasses by world-renowned musicians

October 14, 2011

Mezzo-soprano Irina Mishura will give a vocal masterclass on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m.

Loyola University New Orleans’ Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series will offer masterclasses with two acclaimed musicians at the end of the month. Mezzo-soprano Irina Mishura will give a vocal masterclass on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich will give a composer masterclass on Friday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. in Room 103 of the Communications/Music Complex. Both events are free and open to the public.

Russian-born Mishura has established herself as one of the most important dramatic mezzo-sopranos singing today, and is well-known to audiences throughout North America and Europe. She has sung at many renowned venues, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala and Covent Garden. Last April, Mishura stole the show in the New Orleans Opera’s production of “Il Trovatore.”

Zwilich is a prolific composer in virtually all media, and her works have been performed by most of the leading American orchestras and by major ensembles abroad. She is the recipient of numerous prizes and honors, and in 1983, was the first woman ever to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Music. In 1995, she was named to the first Composer’s Chair in the history of Carnegie Hall, and was designated Musical America’s Composer of the Year for 1999.
