Wolfpack awarded Champions of Character

October 14, 2011

Loyola University New Orleans was once again named a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Champions of Character Five Star Institution. This marks the third consecutive year the ‘Pack has been awarded this prestigious title.

In order to achieve the award, schools must score 60 points or higher on the NAIA Champions of Character Scorecard. Institutions are measured in the following categories: character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition, character promotion, student-athlete grade point averages and no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

“We are extremely grateful to be recognized by the NAIA as a Champions of Character Five Star Institution,” said athletic director and men’s basketball coach Dr. Michael Giorlando. “The lessons learned in applying the five core values of character on and off the playing field is paramount to our student athletes for their future endeavors, and fits perfectly with Loyola University’s mission of educating the whole person.”

Twelve teams were recognized and represented by the Southern States Athletic Conference this year. Loyola improved upon the previous year’s 61-point performance by scoring 78 total points, fourth highest in the conference. The ‘Pack is proud to boast its excellence in integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

“The Scorecard supports and recognizes member institutions and conferences using sport as a vehicle to teach life lessons,” said Kristin Gillette, NAIA director of Champions of Character. “No doubt this is a point of differentiation in college athletics and makes a huge impact on our 60,000 student-athletes.”
