Women in politics focus of two events next week

March 2, 2012

The Women’s Resource Center at Loyola University New Orleans presents two events next week geared towards encouraging young women to participate in politics, both in school and after graduation. Both are free and will be held in the Audubon Room, located in the Danna Student Center.

The first event, in collaboration with the Career Development Center at Loyola and the Louisiana Legislative Women’s Caucus Foundation, is the forum "Women in Politics,” which will be held on Tuesday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m.

The event was created to make young women more aware of the details of the political process – both “behind the scenes” and as political candidates. It also aims to demystify politics, encourage women to become politically engaged, and to introduce a group of local women political leaders.

Natasha Bingham, assistant professor extraordinary faculty in the Department of Political Science, will serve as moderator for the panel, which includes:

  • Karen Carter Peterson, Louisiana state senator and recently named chair of the Louisiana Legislative Women's Caucus
  • Laverne Saulny, New Orleans regional director for Senator Mary Landrieu
  • María Pabón López, J.D., dean of the Loyola College of Law
  • Brooke Smith, Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s director of strategic partnerships
  • Elizabeth Brusseau, Tulane University undergraduate student currently running for the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee

Students who attend are also invited to participate in the “Elect Her - Campus Women Win” workshop on Saturday, March 10 from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Please contact Karen Reichard at reichard@loyno.edu for more information and to register for this workshop.

“Elect Her - Campus Women Win,” a collaboration between the American Association of University Women and Running Start, encourages and trains young women to run for student government on their campuses. Loyola was one of ten universities nationwide chosen to host the workshop the first year in 2010. This is Loyola's third year participating. The workshop includes several speakers and a facilitator from Running Start. The Honorable Regina Bartholomew, J.D. ’99, will be the keynote speaker at this event, which features political consultant Renee Lapeyrolerie and Loyola Student Government Association members Michael Morin, Haley Humiston and Jasmine Barnes.

Since 1881, AAUW has been a leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls. With nearly 100,000 members, 1,000 branches and 500 college/university partners' members nationwide, AAUW is committed to education, advocacy and research on behalf of women's equity.

Running Start is a nonprofit organization that brings young women to politics so that they are knowledgeable about the process, invested in the outcome and interested in participating as elected leaders. Their programs educate young women and girls about the importance of politics, and imbue them with the skills they need to be leaders so that they can get the "running start" they need to achieve greater political power.
