Psychology professor recognized for distinguished service in massage therapy

March 2, 2012

Glenn Hymel, Ed.D., psychology professor at Loyola University New Orleans and licensed massage therapist, received two prestigious awards in 2011 for his service to the field of massage therapy. He also currently serves on the editorial boards of two professional journals.

At the American Massage Therapy Association’s annual convention in October, Hymel was awarded the AMTA 2011 National Distinguished Service Award and the Massage Therapy Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award for Visionary Leadership for his 11 years of service to the organization. The AMTA is a 58,000-plus member professional organization representing manual therapists specializing principally in therapeutic massage and bodywork. The Massage Therapy Foundation was founded by AMTA in 1990 with the mission of bringing the benefits of massage therapy to the broadest spectrum of society through the generation, dissemination and application of knowledge in this field.

In addition to the awards, Hymel is also the founding executive editor of the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, a peer-reviewed, open access, quarterly journal that is currently indexed in multiple biomedical and life science research databases. He also serves as associate editor of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, a monthly publication focusing on the latest therapeutic techniques and current professional debate.

Hymel is a graduate of the Blue Cliff School of Therapeutic Massage in Metairie, La., and maintains a limited manual therapy practice in the greater New Orleans area. He has published extensively in major psychology and education journals and is the author of the textbook, “Research Methods for Massage & Holistic Therapies” and the tertiary author of “Clinical Massage in the Healthcare Setting.”
