Loyola alumna named president of Wittenberg College

March 9, 2012

Loyola University New Orleans alumna Laurie Joyner, Ph.D., ’86, former associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was recently named president of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Joyner will be the university’s 14th president and first female to serve in the position in the school’s 167-year history. The Wittenberg University board unanimously selected Joyner after a seven-month nationwide search process. She will begin in her new role on July 1.

While at Loyola, she served in various positions, including faculty leadership roles on the academic and faculty affairs committee of the Board of Trustees and University Senate Executive Council. Joyner is the current vice president for planning and dean of the college at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

David Boyle, board chairman and chairman of the presidential search committee told the Dayton Business Journal, “Her exemplary qualifications along with her student-centered, data-driven approach to problem solving, and uncompromising commitment to the liberal arts clearly resonated with the Wittenberg community, and we are thrilled that she has agreed to lead Wittenberg forward.”

“I am honored to be selected to lead Wittenberg University at this important time in its history,” Joyner said. “Wittenberg was attractive to me for its commitment to the liberal arts within the context of an inclusive, person-centered academic community.”

Wittenberg, located in southwest Ohio, is the ninth largest university in the Dayton region with about 1,950 students.
