Student receives prestigious Gilman scholarship to study abroad

May 11, 2012

Faelynn Carroll, a sophomore at Loyola University New Orleans, was recently awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to spend the summer studying in the western African country of Senegal.

A French major, Carroll was one of only 500 students to receive the scholarship for the summer. She was awarded $3,000 to study in the capital city of Dakar, where she will focus on improving her French language skills and interact with the local society and culture.

According to Mariette Thomas, study abroad adviser at Loyola’s Center for International Education, many Loyola students are prime candidates to apply for this outstanding award from the U.S. Department of State.

“I am excited that Faelynn was fortunate to receive this wonderful scholarship,” Thomas said. “The program was created as a way to diversify the kinds of students who are interested in international education opportunities, but who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.”

Since the inception of the scholarship program in 2001, nearly 10,000 students across the United States have used the Gilman Scholarship to study in more than 100 countries. The program encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is funded through the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
