Critically-acclaimed author presents lecture on 'Obamacare'

September 7, 2012

Loyola University New Orleans College of Law presents critically-acclaimed author and president of Legal Writing Pro, LLC, Ross Guberman, in a free lecture about lessons learned from the “Obamacare” briefs filed in the United States Supreme Court. The lecture takes place on Friday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. in the College of Law, Room 308, and is open to the public.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” is a United States federal statute signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010 aimed primarily at decreasing the number of uninsured Americans and reducing the overall costs of health care. Twenty-six states, several individuals and the National Federation of Independent Business brought suit to challenge the constitutionality of the statute, namely its individual mandate and Medicaid expansion provisions. Briefs were filed and arguments were made in the United States Supreme Court, which issued its opinion on June 28. Guberman will comment on the writing techniques used in the briefs filed in this blockbuster decision.

A professional lecturer at George Washington University Law School, Guberman is the author of the Amazon bestseller, “Point Made: How to Write Like the Nation’s Top Advocates,” praised by critics as a must for the library of veteran litigators. Guberman’s next book will address how to write like the world’s greatest judges.

Guberman has conducted more than 1,000 programs on three continents for many of the largest and most prestigious law firms, federal judges and dozens of agencies and bar associations. After the federal takeover of Fannie Mae, Guberman’s work was heralded as groundbreaking and Slate magazine called his 2002 article about the company “totally brilliant and prescient.”
