Prison and race: JSRI fellow publishes theological book on the topic

February 8, 2013

Alex Mikulich, Ph.D., research fellow with the Jesuit Social Research Institute at Loyola University New Orleans, has published a new book on the moral role of whites when it comes to the disproportionate incarceration of African-Americans and Latinos.

“The Scandal of White Complicity in U.S. Hyper-incarceration: A Nonviolent Spirituality of White Resistance” focuses on nonviolent ways whites can challenge the disparate incarceration of African-Americans and Latinos in the U.S. prison system. Written by Mikulich and co-authors Catholic theologians Laurie Cassidy, Ph.D., and Margaret Pfeil, Ph.D., reviews for the book include high praise from three former presidents of the Catholic Theological Society of America.

The Jesuit Social Research Institute will host an evening event on the topic April 10 in “Hyper-Incarceration Nation: Who Are We Really Locking Up?” with the book’s authors. The free event—sponsored by the Jesuit Social Research Institute, Gillis Long Poverty Law Center and the Department of Sociology—is set for Miller Hall in room 114 at 7 p.m.
