Student journalists win top regional honors for writing, photography

April 12, 2013

Student journalists at Loyola University New Orleans won top awards, sweeping multiple categories from the Society of Professional Journalists regional chapter covering Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. The awards count Loyola student journalists for The Maroon newspaper and Wolf Magazine among the best writers and photographers in the region, including first place winners for general news reporting, feature writing, sports writing and feature photography among small college newspapers. First place finishers will represent Loyola in the national competition in Anaheim, Calif., Aug. 24 to 26.

“These awards again are a testament to the quality of the education the students receive here at Loyola. We are so very proud of each and every one of them and to professor Mike Giusti who guides them along the way,” said Sonya F. Duhé, Ph.D., Loyola professor and director of the School of Mass Communication.

The awards recognize eight Loyola students, including:

  • First place for General News Reporting (small) for “Should I stay or should I go?” by Shannon Donaldson
  • Second place for General News Reporting (small) for “Students help Venezuelans vote,” by Aaren Gordon

“We’ve got such a great dedicated crew—they are doing it for the right reasons. They are in it for their dedication to journalism,” said Giusti '00, M.B.A. '12, adviser for Loyola’s student media. “The Society of Professional Journalists awards show what a great a job the Loyola students do and that they can compete on a state, regional and national level.”

The Society of Professional Journalists—the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization—recognized the Loyola students in an awards ceremony April 6 at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. The Loyola Student Government Association helped fund the award entries.
