Campus community invited to celebrate life of former English professor

April 12, 2013

The Loyola University New Orleans community is invited to celebrate the life and career of Richard Johnson, Ph.D., professor emeritus of English at Loyola. Johnson passed away Feb. 28 at the age of 78. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 16 at 5 p.m. in Ignatius Chapel, located on the first floor of Bobet Hall.

Johnson served for three decades at Loyola in various roles—as an English professor, assistant dean, director of the Common Curriculum, department chair and director of freshman composition. Born in Flushing, N.Y., Johnson served in the Air Force and taught for three years at Miami University in Ohio before calling New Orleans home, where he spent the majority of his career teaching at Loyola from 1970-1998.

After his retirement, Johnson took up a second career as a painter. Per Johnson's wishes, the family asks that gifts in his memory be made to the Department of Art and Design at Loyola.

A complete obituary was published in The Times-Picayune March 9.
