Law alumnus receives The Times-Picayune Loving Cup for his service to others

May 10, 2013

Mark Surprenant, J.D. ’77, an alumnus and adjunct faculty member of Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, was recently recognized for his pro bono legal work and volunteerism by The Times-Picayune, which awarded him the Loving Cup for 2012. Surprenant, who teaches an environmental torts law class as an adjunct professor at Loyola’s College of Law, has been a partner in Adams and Reese law firm since 1982, practicing as an attorney there since 1977.

According to The Times-Picayune, the Loving Cup has been awarded since 1901 to men and women who have worked unselfishly for the community without expectation of public recognition or material reward.

Surprenant has been dedicated to community service since the beginning of his career. He currently serves as liaison partner for the Adams and Reese Pro Bono Services Committee. In 1988, he created HUGS—the firm's corporate philanthropy program—and in 2000, he established CA&RE—the firm's official pro bono program. Surprenant is also the co-founder of SOLACE, Support of Lawyers/Legal Personnel All Concern Encouraged, a statewide volunteer organization with more than 8,000 members. The organization supports those in the legal community who have experienced a life-changing event. Surprenant co-founded this group in 2002 after his wife, Monica, suffered a life-threatening brain aneurysm.

Surprenant has a long list of honors for his volunteerism and contributions to the community. His most recent includes the Pro Bono Award from the Legal Services Corporation (2013); the Distinguished Donor Award from The Pro Bono Project (2012); Friend of Pro Bono Award from The Pro Bono Project (2011); Presidents Award from the New Orleans Bar Association (2010); Camille F. Gavel Jr. Pro Bono Award from the New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (2008); the Leah Hipple McKay Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteerism from the Louisiana State Bar Association (2008); Role Model of the Year by the Young Leadership Council of New Orleans; and Great Gentleman for 2007 by the East Jefferson General Hospital Auxiliary.
