Loyola teams up to host regional college workshop for high school students

September 13, 2013

To provide high school students the information they need to achieve their dreams of attending college, higher education professionals from throughout the region will team up for a Southern Association for College Admission Counseling Mini Camp College Saturday, Sept. 28 at Loyola University New Orleans. The Mini Camp College events, held at various colleges and universities throughout the region, have attracted hundreds of students in the past.

The college workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Loyola’s Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall located on the university’s main campus. The free event is open to local high school students and others in the community who want valuable information about applying to college. Sessions feature talks and information about how grades can impact college competitiveness, the college application process, preparing for college fairs, scholarships and financial aid, and standardized test options.

“Given the importance of the decision to go to college, this event will provide students and their parents the opportunity to hear from the experts in the field. It is an example of how colleges and universities are engaged in helping improve our local communities through education,” said Keith Gramling, dean of undergraduate admissions at Loyola.

The event will feature Loyola’s Office of Admissions Associate Director Crystal Vaccaro along with University of Louisiana Lafayette Admissions Director Andy Benoit, who will offer insight and tips on the college search and application process. Loyola Financial Aid Director Carrie Glass will also speak with attendees about college scholarships and navigating the financial aid process. Laurie Leftwich, college counselor at Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, will talk about preparing for college fairs. ACT representative Carl Forbes will lead the session on standardized tests.

Sponsored by ACT and The National Society of High School Scholars, the New Orleans event is followed by other regional workshops in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 16 and Rock Hill, S.C., March 8.
