Design instructor screens short film at New Orleans, Chicago film festivals

September 20, 2013

A short film by Loyola University New Orleans graphic design instructor Tom Varisco will screen at the TIMECODE: NOLA Film Festival in New Orleans this Saturday, Sept. 21, at the AllWays Lounge and Theatre on St. Claude Avenue. Varisco’s assistant Erik Winkowski edited the film.

“Was it the End,” a one-minute dramatic short, uses a series of questions and statements to explore the idea of the end of the world. With piano in the background played by Winkowski, the questions are posed against an array of video clips, from a meteor floating through space toward Earth and a child crying to a rose blooming and an older man laughing.

An official selection of the Chicago International REEL Shorts Film Festival earlier this month, the short was originally part of the national Corbis Motion One Minute Cinema Competition in April. Although Varisco usually shoots his own film, the contest required he only use imagery from the company’s archives. “Was it the End” received the Grand Prize at the competition.
