Students showcase cultures from around the globe in Loyola's Country Fair

October 18, 2013

Students at Loyola University New Orleans are turning the campus into a multicultural destination Friday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m. During the 16th annual Country Fair hosted by Loyola’s International Student Association and the Center for International Education, the Peace Quad will showcase tables dedicated to countries worldwide—featuring clothing, decorations, crafts or food to share various cultures with others. In the event of rain, the fair will be held in the St. Charles Room, located in the Danna Student Center.

Kumbuka, an African drum and dance collective based in New Orleans, will perform live at the Country Fair. Kumbuka is known for their vibrant, colorful and percussive movements that make evident the connection between Africa, Haiti and New Orleans. They are dedicated to the preservation, presentation, documentation and research of traditional African and African-American folklore, and their repertoire consists of dances from Senegal, Guinea, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Congo, Kenya, South Africa, Haiti and New Orleans.

The Country Fair seeks to showcase and celebrate Loyola’s diverse international community, featuring interesting information from a plethora of countries. For example, find out which country is home to the golden temple, where Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova inspired a dessert created in her honor and which Asian country imports 85 percent of Jamaica’s annual coffee production.

To apply to host a table or for more information, contact the Center for International Education.
