Student newspaper is named best in the U.S. for editorial writing

May 9, 2014

Student journalists of The Maroon newspaper at Loyola University New Orleans won first place in the nation for editorial writing in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence competition. The student-run newspaper was recognized for three editorial pieces written in 2013, which addressed controversial constitutional changes implemented by the Student Government Association. A ceremony will take place Sept. 4-6 in Nashville, Tenn., at the national conference.

The Maroon beat out national finalists from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Washington for the national accolade in editorial writing. Alumnus Daniel Quick ‘13 and senior Kylee McIntyre were the editorial writers for the 2013 calendar year, while alumnus Sam Winstrom ‘13 and senior Aaren Gordon were the editors-in-chief during 2013.

“Continuing our winning tradition at the national level demonstrates the high caliber of student journalists who work in The Maroon office year after year. Seeing our journalists take home top honors for their work—which advocated for the university’s students on an issue that would have otherwise gone unnoticed—makes this award all the more gratifying,” said Loyola Student Media adviser and instructor Michael Giusti ‘00, M.B.A. '12.

In addition to the national recognition, The Maroon also received regional honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, which grants either “finalist” or “winner” status for the regional awards.

The Region 12 award recipients are:

  • The Maroon was also named a Winner in Editorial Writing for its editorials addressing SGA constitutional changes;
  • Senior Lucy Dieckhaus was recognized as a Winner for In-Depth Reporting for her coverage of the SGA constitutional changes;
  • The Maroon was named a finalist for Best All-Around Non Daily Student Newspaper (editors-in-chief were Winstrom and Gordon);
  • The Wolf magazine was named a finalist for Best Student Magazine (editors were senior Shannon Donaldson and alumna Precious Esie ‘13);
  • The Maroon was named a finalist for Best Affiliated Website (Senior Devinn Adams served as Web developer);
  • Alumnus Eric Knoepfler ‘13 was named a finalist for Best Feature Photography;
  • Alumna Susana Aramburu ‘13 was named a finalist for Best Photo Illustration;
  • Winstrom was named a finalist for Best Photo Illustration; and
  • Junior Nia Porter was named a finalist for Best General News Reporting.
