College of Law is recipient of major anonymous gift

September 9, 2014

A new $150,000 gift to the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law will support the recently announced Loyola Incubator Program—an intensive, year-long mentorship and skills program training the next wave of solo practice lawyers to address the legal needs of the poor. The anonymous donation from a New Orleans-area couple will also provide scholarship assistance for first-year law students and be used to establish a new professorship in the College of Law. The professorship, which will be endowed in perpetuity, will give a faculty member the ability to research emerging topics on the legal horizon.

The incubator program in the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic and Center for Social Justice will consist of five recent College of Law graduates in their first three years of solo practice who will receive the opportunity to not only launch their solo careers, but have access to mentorship, peer feedback, resources, instructions, case referrals and training in law office management. The Loyola Incubator Program is now accepting applications.

“This gift will support recent lawyers in the Loyola Incubator Program who pledge to give back to the community by providing pro bono work through the program, which focuses on social justice-oriented solo practice work,” said College of Law Dean María Pabón López. “This gift will ultimately make a difference in the lives of legal professionals who want to fight for the rights of the indigent.”

The donors—both strong Catholics—felt it was important to show support for Loyola as an institution in the community that fights for the rights of the disadvantaged, including the homeless, immigrants and children. Although the donors didn’t attend Loyola, they still maintain strong connections to the College of Law through family and their local business where 82 percent of employees are Loyola College of Law graduates.
