Loyola plans tobacco-free campus policy for 2015

September 9, 2014

Loyola University New Orleans is proposing a new tobacco-free policy for its campus, banning the use of all tobacco products as well as e-cigarettes. The policy is slated to go into effect in fall 2015. The discussion for the new policy was originally initiated by Loyola’s Student Government Association in 2013 and since then, the university has convened a planning committee of faculty, staff and students for the purposes of implementing the new policy.

To assist in Loyola’s efforts of promoting the public health of its community through the proposed tobacco-free policy, the Office of Student Affairs was awarded a $15,000 grant from The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living, a program of the Louisiana Cancer Research Center and the Louisiana Public Health Institute. The statewide tobacco control program—funded by a state excise tax on tobacco—advocates for a healthier Louisiana through 100 percent tobacco-free living.

Loyola’s planning committee has reviewed tobacco-free policies from other Jesuit colleges and universities nationwide and will meet with the University Senate, Staff Senate and the SGA Senate to begin the informational campaign for the new tobacco-free policy.

Tobacco use remains the nation’s leading preventable cause of premature death and disability, according to the U.S. Surgeon General, and there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. To promote a safe and healthful environment, Loyola is moving to adopt a policy that encourages tobacco users to reduce or eliminate their consumption, and to protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke exposure.

The state’s public colleges and universities were required to go smoke-free by Aug. 1 under a law passed by the legislature last year. The policies ban cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes and are aimed at creating a healthier environment.
